HOW TO GET A PERMIT

Step 1: Create a WA DOL Account

No

Create your DOL account here
This will give you your WDL number (Washington Driver License #)
Tip: If you have a WA ID card or expired permit, choose *“Yes, I have a WA driving record”

Step 2: Choose a Path

Option A: Taking the Full 40-Hour Driver’s Ed Course

You may qualify for a permit waiver!

  1. Submit your WDL number to Driving 101
  2. Or call us at 360-892-6988 with your WDL number
  3. We will enter it within 24 business hours

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 15 years old
  • We need: your WDL number, payment, and signed contract
  • You can get your permit up to 10 days before class starts

Option B: Not Taking Driver’s Ed / Adult Brush-Up Students

You must take the DOL Knowledge Exam to get your permit

  • Must be 15 ½ or older
  • Pay $40 for the test
  • Test Monday–Friday, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM (walk-ins welcome!)
  • Bring:
    • Valid photo ID
    • Your WDL number

Step 3: Get Your Instruction Permit

Option A: Get a Non-Photo Permit Online (Under 18 Only)

  1. Log into your DOL account
  2. Select “Get your instruction permit”
  3. Confirm info & pay $25
  4. Go to “NPIP Permit Process” and print your permit

Note: Parent/guardian info must match their DOL record.

Option B: Get a Photo Permit In-Person

  1. Schedule an appointment at the DOL (recommended)
  2. Bring proof of identity
  3. Pay $25 at the DOL office
